Port Royal special election set for May

Port Royal will soon fill the Town Council seat left vacant when Vernon DeLoach died Feb. 20.

A special election will be held May 16.

The filing period for candidates begins Friday and closes at noon March 20. Write-in candidate filing closes April 3.

The last day to register to vote in the election is April 14.

Candidates must file with the town of Port Royal at 700 Paris Avenue. The filing fee is $100.

DeLoach, 88, first served on council in the late 1960s before winning election again in 2001. He died at Millennium Post-Acute Rehabilitation in Columbia after an illness.

“DeLoach was undoubtedly a hallmark to the town of Port Royal, and will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of working with him,” Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce president Blakely Williams said.
